Russian General detained in fraud probe

Russian authorities detained Vadim Shamarin, the deputy chief of the Russian General Staff, in connection with a fraud investigation, the Russian propaganda outlet Kommersant reported on May 23, citing sources.

Law enforcement conducted a search related to the criminal case involving alleged fraud by Shamarin, a source within law enforcement told the publication.
Authorities took Shamarin for questioning to the Main Military Investigative Directorate of the Russian Investigative Committee.
The 235th Garrison Military Court is reviewing the case.
Russian authorities earlier arrested Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov.

Russia’s Investigative Committee announced Ivanov’s detention on April 23 on suspicion of bribery.
Ivanov is to be remanded in custody until June 23.
Ivanov’s wife in April 2023 was reportedly vacationing in the French ski resort of Courchevel during Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. The Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation accused her of lavish spending of millions of dollars that did not match the family’s official income.
Ivanov had been Deputy Defense Minister since 2016. He previously headed Oboronstoy, a joint stock company for defense and space production under the ministry.
