According to the Department’s website, the office “is responsible for using audits to ensure that all state money is spent legally and properly.”

Here’s who is on the primary ballot for Auditor General.

Republicans

Timothy DeFoor

Pennsylvania Auditor General Timothy DeFoor is running for another term to serve as the state’s “fiscal watchdog.”

DeFoor previously served as a Special Investigator with the Commonwealth and as Dauphin County Controller. He’s served as Auditor General since 2020 and is a Harrisburg resident.

DeFoor has degrees from Penn State University, the University of Pittsburgh, and the Harrisburg University of Science and Technology.

“Good government is about people, not politics,” says DeFoor’s campaign website. “I’ve spent my career fighting waste, fraud and abuse to protect families, seniors and local businesses. I’m running for Auditor General to help all Pennsylvanians and ensure our tax dollars can be spent on our priorities: lower taxes, better jobs, stronger schools and improving the cost of living for families and seniors.”

Democrats

Malcolm Kenyatta

State Representative Malcolm Kenyatta of Philadelphia announced his campaign for Auditor General in March 2023.

“I think that it is time that we have an underdog to be the watchdog for working Pennsylvanians,” said Kenyatta during his announcement.

In 2018 Kenyatta became the first openly LGBTQ+ person of color elected to the Pennsylvania General Assembly. He ran an unsuccessful campaign for the U.S. Senate in 2022, finishing third in the Democratic primary.

Kenyatta currently serves on the House Commerce, Finance, Judiciary, Liquor Control and State Government Committees. He has degrees from Temple University and Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Mark Pinsley

Lehigh County Controller Mark Pinsley will appear on the ballot for Auditor General in the April primary.

A former Township Commissioner, Pinsley has touted his career in the Army Reserves and in the corporate field.

I’m the only candidate with years of experience with auditing the government,” said Pinsley’s campaign website. “As Lehigh County Controller, I investigated how Children and Youth Services worked so I could help parents who had their kids taken away without cause. I saved the county $9 million in healthcare spending through a rigorous audit. I worked to move more than $140 million in county funds from a bank that donated to anti-choice candidates to a politically neutral bank.”

Not running

Mark Rozzi (D)

Former Pennsylvania Speaker of the House Mark Rozzi dropped out of the Auditor General race in January 2024.

Pennsylvania’s primary election is set for April 23.
