RRT announces plans for upcoming show

Mar. 22—Rushville Regional Theatre is doing the thespian organization's first straight (non-musical) play on June 7, 8 and 9.

Titled "The Man From Earth," the show is about history professor John Oldman, who unexpectedly resigns from the university. His startled colleagues impulsively invite themselves to his home, pressing him for an explanation, but they are shocked to hear his reason for premature retirement: John claims he must move on because he is immortal and cannot stay in one place for more than 10 years without his secret being discovered.

Tempers rise and emotions flow as John's fellow professors attempt to poke holes in his story, but it soon becomes clear that his tale is as impossible to disprove as it is to verify. What starts out as a friendly gathering soon builds to an unexpected and shattering climax.

Acclaimed science fiction author Jerome Bixby, who wrote for the original "Star Trek" and "The Twilight Zone" series, originally conceived this story back in the early 1960s. It would come to be his last great work.

Auditions for "The Man From Earth" are scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 2 and 3 at Mocha Moose, 245 N. Main Street, Rushville. Those interested may show up anytime during those two hours. An excerpt from the play will be provided for them to read for their audition, and they may enter from Main Street or from the back parking lot.

Callbacks will be April 4, if needed.

"We have done two musical performances, three summers of our R.O.A.R Children's Theater, and we are ready to produce our first straight play," RRT board member Michele Orme said. "Former Rush County Player actor and director Aaron Scholl spoke with a member of our board about doing 'The Man From Earth' and we all jumped at it. We are excited to have Aaron involved with RRT. His theater experience is a great asset to this endeavor."
