Route details: Funeral procession for Officer Jacob Derbin

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio (WJW) – Hundreds of people are expected to attend fallen Euclid Police Officer Jacob Derbin’s funeral on Saturday morning.

His funeral procession is also expected to long, impacting traffic in the area as it moves from Ripepi & Sons Funeral Home to St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Parma.

“It’s a tragedy. He was a young man and just a terrible, terrible tragedy that has touched the city of Euclid and law enforcement as a whole around the region and around the country,” Middleburg Heights Police Chief Ed Tomba said.

Derbin, 23, was robbed of his life while responding to a call in Euclid on May 11. He was ambushed by gunfire by Deshawn Vaughn, who would later take his own life after a standoff with SWAT in Shaker Heights on May 12.

Derbin’s calling hours on Friday produced hundreds of people visiting to pay their respects.

On Saturday, it’s expected that much of the public will line the route of the procession to show support for Derbin and his family.

“If the public wants to come out and show their support, they’re more than welcome in the city of Middleburg Heights, along Bagley Road, and also here in front of our police station,” Tomba said. “We have a plaza here and the public is more than welcome to park here and show their support for Officer Durbin and the members of the Euclid Police Department right here in front of the police station.”

The funeral procession route will start at Ripepi, departing at 10:15 a.m. It’s a relatively long route to St. Columbkille, totaling 9.2 miles. The procession will head east on Bagley Road, which turns into Pleasant Valley Road before turning left to head north on Broadview Road before arriving at the church for funeral mass at 11 a.m.

He will be laid to rest at St. Mary’s Church in Cuyahoga Heights after funeral mass.

Tomba said if you live or work in the area, expect delays in the morning.

“There is going to be added traffic,” Tomba said. “You know, expect some congestion. We will have numerous officers directing traffic. This will not disrupt traffic for a very long time, but there’s going to be about 30 minutes where there is going to be a lot of traffic. If you’re driving, I would obviously ask that you respect the funeral procession. There will be numerous motorcycle officers and law enforcement officers leading the procession. So, if you are held up for a moment or two at a intersection, we ask that you just be patient in reverence to this tragedy that occurred.”

FOX 8 will livestream the funeral on Saturday.
