Rosie the Riveter Day at the Capitol

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — An event at the Michigan State Capitol is taking place Thursday to remember Rosie the Riveter.

Officials said there will be hundreds of veterans, women in manufacturing, Rosies and Rosie descendants, and students in STEM for this annual celebration.

“I’m a firm believer that you can’t be what you can’t see. And so, for them to come to an event like this and see actual women that are working in stem careers and the history, it’s going to be huge for them,” Cindy Kangas, Executive Director of the Capital Area Manufacturing Council.

According to Kangas, ‘Rosies’ are women who stepped into the workplace when their brothers and their fathers were overseas, and when the men came back, the women never really received acknowledgment.

“So, we’re going to come together, celebrate them. We’re going to celebrate the five generations of the women in the workforce,” Kangas said.

“And we’re also going to show the next generation of the talent pipeline that stem jobs are viable career choices for them.”

Kangas said sharing the space with the ‘Rosies’ is her favorite part of the event.

“They are all right around 100 years old, very sweet walking history and they’re very sassy and proud of the job that they’ve done,” Kangas said.

The event is open to the public and starts at 3 p.m.
