Rome Township child drowns in pond
May 25—ROME — An 18-month-old girl drowned on Thursday after entering a pond on the family's Dodgeville Road property, according to a press release from the Ashtabula County Sheriff's Office.
"The female child was discovered by her mother after she had been missing for approximately 15 minutes. The child was removed from the pond and lifesaving measures were performed," the press release states.
Emergency medical workers from South Central Ambulance District transported the child to a landing area to be flown by medical helicopter to a hospital, but the child died while being transported from the scene, according to the sheriff's office.
There was a fence around the pond but a gate was left open, the release stated. The investigation is ongoing.
