U.S. House Democrats signaled they will rescue Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson of Shreveport if rebel GOP members led by Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green of Georgia try to fire him, setting up a potential showdown vote Wednesday in Washington.

The rare - perhaps unprecedented - move from Democratic leaders comes as a reward for Johnson's effort to pass the $95 billion in foreign aid for Ukraine, Israel and other U.S. allies 10 days ago. The Senate then quickly passed the package and President Biden signed it into law.

“We will vote to table Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Motion to Vacate the Chair. If she invokes the motion, it will not succeed,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Minority Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass., and Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., said Tuesday in a statement.

Later Tuesday Greene scheduled an 8 a.m. Wednesday press conference with fellow rebel Republican Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie, who has called on Johnson to resign or be ousted as they did with former GOP Speaker Kevin McCarthy last year, creating weeks of chaos in the House.

Greene mocked Johnson on X, posting: "Mike Johnson is officially the Democrat Speaker of the House."

Johnson has said he considers himself a "wartime speaker" and insisted he won't be swayed by threats to his job by the hard-right resistance in his own party.

“I don’t walk around this building being worried about a motion to vacate," he told reporters last week. "I have to do my job. We did. I’ve done here what I believe to be the right thing. If you do the right thing, you let the chips fall where they may.”
