Rock blasting and removal closes Watauga County road, detour set up

WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Traffic along one key Watauga County road south of Boone is closed into Thursday morning due to “major rock removal.”

State and county officials say N.C. 105 from Broadstone to Shulls Mill Road is closed for the roadwork. Traffic through that pass is routed to NC 194 to Banner Elk or Shulls Mill Road.

The roadwork is between mile markers 5.8 and 6.4 on the state highway.

N.C. Department of Transportation officials anticipate the road opening Thursday morning around 6:30 a.m.

Traffic officials say semi-tractor-trailers cannot use the roads due to extremely sharp curves.
