Roadways, airport expected to be busy Memorial Day weekend

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Memorial Day weekend travel for 2024 may be the busiest in nearly 20 years, according to AAA.

This comes as around 44 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home between Thursday and Monday.

Anlleyn Venegas, an official with AAA, said, “3.5 million people in Southern California are expected to travel. That’s a 4.7% increase from last year and 4.2% increase from 2019. This is a five-day period starting Thursday through Monday. The busiest days not only on the road but at the airport are Thursday, Friday and Monday.”

This follows record-breaking Memorial Day weekend air travel in 2023.

Traffic experts suggest leaving earlier to avoid peak travel times on Sunday or Monday, which is the official holiday date.
