These roads will be closed during Memorial Day weekend

DENVER (KDVR) — While it’s 80 degrees and feels like hiking weather in Denver, it’s not summer for the rest of the state just yet. Before you head to the mountains for the long weekend, check to see if the roads are even open.

The snow seems to be over for Denver and summer activities like farmers markets are opening up around the city.

All signs, and temperatures, point to summer, but it’s not the same weather heading into the mountains. The continued spring snow is leaving many seasonal roads closed for Memorial Day weekend.

Many seasonal roads open up at the end of May, but they won’t be open in time for the long weekend. Some of the roads that lead to popular hikes are still plowing snow while other areas are completing repairs.

The following roads will be closed this weekend:

  • Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park – U.S. 34 between Sun Valley (11 miles east of Grand Lake) and County Road 20E (7 miles west of Estes Park) from Mile Point 26.1 to Mile Point 51.2

  • U.S. 50 over Blue Mesa reservoir from mile point 136 to 137.8 Red Creek Road

  • Cottonwood Pass between Forest Service Road 587 and Forest Service Road 306 from Mile Point 0.05 to Mile Point 12.5

  • Kebler Pass – County Road 12 between Forest Service Road 759 and Keystone Mine (2 to 22 miles west of Crested Butte) from Mile Point 9 to Mile Point 29.

  • Mount Blue Sky Road – CO 5 between Echo Lake Campground and the end of CO 5/Mount Blue Sky Road from Mile Point 0.1 to Mile Point 14.89

  • Independence Pass – CO 82 between Tagert Lake Road (5 miles east of Aspen) and Carlton Tunnel Road (13 miles west of Twin Lakes) from Mile Point 47 to Mile Point 68.5

Based on construction and crashes, even more roads could be closed. If you plan on heading outside of the Mile High City this weekend, follow along with Denver traffic and CoTrip for the most recent updates.
