Road rage incident escalated to shooting in Santa Rosa

(KRON) –  Two people were arrested after a road rage incident that escalated into a shooting, according to the  Santa Rosa Police Department

Around 11:40 a.m. on Wednesday, while a Santa Rosa Police Department Field and Evidence Technician was in the process of towing a vehicle, she noticed the driver of a black Volkswagen Tiguan fire a gun from his vehicle into the back glass of a grey Nissan Altima. Subsequently, the vehicles fled westbound on Pressley Street after the shooting. The incident occurred in the 900 block of Pressley Street.

The technician utilized her portable radio to report the shooting.

Responding officers located the cars driving northbound on Santa Rosa Avenue. The driver of the Nissan Altima pulled over to the side of the road.

The driver of the Volkswagen Tiguan identified was identified as 34-year-old Rohnert Park resident William Kammerer.

During a high-speed police pursuit, Kammerer drove the wrong-way on Santa Rosa Avenue. He abandoned his vehicle near Mendocino Avenue and Fifth Street and attempted to flee on foot. An officer detained Kammerer in a parking garage in the 600 block of Third Street.

According to police, officers located two firearms, one of the guns was used in the shooting.

The victim was identified as a 20-year-old resident of Petaluma.

Police later learned that Kammerer and the victim were involved in a road rage incident turned shooting. Kammerer and the victim engaged in an argument near the intersection of Hendley Street and Pressley Street. Kammerer fired one round at the victim’s vehicle, shattering the back glass. The victim attempted to flee the area, but Kammerer fired an additional two rounds at the victim. The victim fired at least one round at Kammerer’s vehicle in return prior to surrendering to SRPD officers.

Officers recovered the victim’s firearm. There are no reported injuries in this shooting.

Kammerer was arrested and booked into Sonoma County Jail for the following charges:

  • Felony shooting into an occupied vehicle

  • Felony assault with a deadly weapon, firearm

  • Felon in possession of a firearm

  • Felony evading while driving against traffic

  • Felony use of a firearm while in commission of a felony

  • Misdemeanor obstruction of a public officer

The victim was arrested and booked into Sonoma County Jail for the following charges:

  • Felony possession of a firearm

  • Felony possession of a concealed firearm

The victim’s name will remain anonymous due to them being a victim of a violent crime.
