Riverside County sheriff's deputy shoots and kills man allegedly brandishing handgun

A Riverside County sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a man who the sheriff’s department said had brandished a handgun late Monday night in Perris.

Deputies assigned to the Riverside Alternative Sentencing Program went to a home in the 3300 block of Albillo Loop around 8:04 a.m. Monday “to conduct a probation compliance check,” wrote a sheriff’s department spokesperson, Sgt. Wenndy Brito-Gonzalez.

They found several adults in the backyard, including a man who provided false identification and walked away, ignoring deputies’ commands to stop, Brito-Gonzalez said.

Deputies tried to shock the man with a Taser to get him to comply, but that failed as he ran away and pulled out a handgun, after which a deputy fired, Brito-Gonzalez said.

The man was given medical assistance by deputies and paramedics, but later died at a hospital.

No deputies were injured, and the deputy who shot the man will be placed on paid administrative leave, a routine step in such shootings, Brito-Gonzalez. The sheriff’s department didn’t release the name of the deputy or the man he killed.

In addition to the sheriff’s department, the Riverside County district attorney’s office will investigate the shooting.
