New River Gorge National Park and Preserve hosts public meeting on climbing activities

GLEN JEAN, WV (WVNS) — Officials with the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve (NRGNPP) are inviting those who have an interest in climbing at NRGNPP and Gauley River National Recreation Area to a public meeting.

The meeting will take place at the Canyon Rim Visitor Center in Lansing, WV on May 23, 2024 at 6 p.m. The National Park Service will be providing updates on recent climbing projects, ongoing climbing-related initiatives, volunteer opportunities, a moratorium on new climbing routes, and climbing stewards. Park staff will also take feedback and questions from attendees.

NRGNPP contains more than 1,600 climbing routes, making it one of the largest climbing areas in the eastern United States. Nuttall sandstone, renowned by rock climbers, comprises the expansive cliff that lines much of the western portion of the gorge.

Third annual motorcycle charity ride to be held in Fayetteville

Since the establishment of the national river in 1978, the area has become one of America’s most popular climbing destinations. In 2020, redesignation to a national park and preserve, along with an increase in visitation, led to an increase in popularity among climbers.

Residents, local officials and business owners, organizational representatives, and those interested in climbing are encouraged to provide feedback to the park and preserve.
