Rim Rock Drive to be repaved

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — Construction crews will be repairing Rim Rock Drive and other road surfaces in the Colorado National Park this summer.

Repaving work is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, April 2. Below is a list of scheduled delays, according to the National Park Service:

  • April 2 – April 5: The damaged culvert by the Balanced Rock pullout on the west side of the park will be repaired. There will be single-lane closures with up to 15-minute delays.

  • April 16 – May 20: Repair work on sections of damaged asphalt throughout the park. This will involve single-lane closures with delays of up to 15 minutes. Occasional closures of the portion of Rim Rock Drive between Independence Monument View and DS Road will be necessary. No delays or closures are scheduled for evenings or weekends. Access to Glade Park on the east side and the Visitor Center on the west side will not be affected.

  • May 2 – May 21: Hot tar will be used to seal cracks along Rim Rock Drive with delays of up to 15 minutes.

  • May 22 – June 6: Resurfacing will be done using a polymer microsurfacing material along the entire road. Expect delays of up to 15 minutes. The road will be drivable and bikeable within an hour of application, according to NPS.

  • July 8 – July 24: All pullouts will be resurfaced with the polymer microsurfacing material with delays of up to 15 minutes.

  • July 15 – July 25: The campground, visitor center and Devils Kitchen will be resurfaced. All campsites will move to same-day reservations during this time. Rolling closures of all three loops will occur when the roads are being resurfaced. Officials have yet to set a date for when each loop will be closed.

  • July 8 – August 5: Painting for all stripes and pavement markings.
