WYTHEVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — Hundreds of motorcyclists joined the 2024 “Run for the Wall,” taking riders across several states, to honor veterans.

The mission of the “Run for the Wall” is to raise awareness for veterans who are still missing and missing in action, and to give veterans the “Welcome Home” they deserve.

On May 22, riders exited off Interstate 81 North and headed to Withers Park, in Wytheville. Members of the community and state and local officials gathered to welcome motorcyclists to the town.

“During this week, we place special honor on our veterans,” said Wytheville Mayor Beth Taylor during the Welcome Home ceremony. “While the mission began decades ago, Run for the Wall’s journey of awareness has continued to be as important today as ever.”

“Run for the Wall” began in 1989 by a couple of Vietnam Veterans who traveled across America to spread the word about thousands of men and women still unaccounted for from wars. Over the years, the ride grew, becoming a staple for families and veterans in the community.

Now, more than 1,200 motorcyclists have joined the ride.

On May 23, riders also stopped at the National D-Day Memorial, in Bedford, where they held a moment of silence and ceremony.

Gregory Steele, a rider with “Run for the Wall” says he is riding for a purpose and when he sees the support from the community, it gives him heart.

“All the schools we go to, all the kids, all the cities that are coming out in the middle of the street with their flags, waving…It’s just an amazing feeling. They told me I would get tears on this ride and it has happened.” added Steele.
