‘Rick’s Fun Run’ helps teacher battling cancer

PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An annual outdoor event to help cancer patients appears to be another success despite Sunday’s rain.

Dozens of people gathered at Plains Township Municipal Park for what’s called “Rick’s Fun Run,” but it was not just running.

Some people took part in various activities, all aimed at raising funds

Those activities included getting hit with whipped cream pies or having paint dumped on them.

The event is held in memory of lifelong Plains Township resident Rick Musko who lost his battle with cancer in 2018.

Funds raised this year are supporting Solomon Plains second-grade Teacher Christine Hayward.

She has been on leave since last November getting treated for cancer.

“Miss Hayward had cancer and it’s important to come out here and support her. We were talking about it the whole week. We were excited to come here as friends together in our group,” said Solomon Plains Elementary-Middle School Student Malakai Vanderburg.

This marks the fifth year for “Rick’s Fun Run” which is a registered non-profit organization.
