Richland School Board approves infrastructure fees

Mar. 26—JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — Phase two of the Richland High School LED lighting upgrade was given the go-ahead at Monday's school board meeting.

The group approved $48,000 from capital reserves to initiate the next step of the project that was first approved in January 2023.

John Ribarich, director of facilities, said phase two focuses on the recessed can lights throughout the building, some of which can be eliminated with this new LED technology.

"It's saving time and installation costs," he said.

Superintendent Arnold Nadonley added that the lights being upgraded are in the hallways, common spaces and offices.

Lighting in the classroom will be updated in the future due to the type of ballast in the learning spaces.

Richland officials have previously said lighting costs will be nearly cut in half with this project, from $52,000 annually to $27,000 per year, and in 10 years Richland will save an estimated $256,240 because of this work

In addition to approving phase two, that motion also included future architect fees.

Nadonley said that is in regard to the schematic design phase of the potential elementary building project.

Richland is considering renovations to the primary structure that could include a new roof, windows, additional classrooms and related upgrades.

No official project has been voted on. In October, Nadonley stressed the district was in the exploratory stage.

Other approvals school directors made Monday included hiring All American Athletics to re-coat two high school gymnasium floors for $11,400; approving a quote of $1,500 from Stadium Seating Inspections for the annual inspection of exterior grandstand and bleacher systems; and passing a motion, contingent on solicitor review, for the annual maintenance and support contract with Kelly Generator Equipment through March 2025 for $4,703.25.
