Resident at center for disabilities impregnated in sexual abuse case

GENEVA, Ill. — An investigation is underway after a resident at a center for people with disabilities was sexually abused, resulting in a pregnancy.

The administration of Marklund was informed of a sexual abuse case against a resident of the Marklund Hyde Center campus in Geneva on April 9, according to a press release.

As a result of the abuse, the woman delivered a baby at Delnor Hospital.

The resident is recovering and her family chose to have her return to her home at Marklund.

“In our 70-year history, we have never experienced anything like this. I can guarantee that we will do everything possible to ensure that Marklund will continue to provide a safe home for those we serve and the quality care and support that families have always expected from us,” President and CEO Gil Fonger said. “The safety and security of our residents is always our top concern.”

Three male staff members have been placed on paid leave amid an investigation. Marklund said the three employees and other current and former employees have cooperated with detectives and public health officials. DNA tests have been submitted.

The fact that the pregnancy went unnoticed is part of the ongoing investigation. Symptoms of the resident’s disability might have masked the appearance of pregnancy, according to Marklund.

“Because of her disability, she has a distended abdomen,” Fonger told WGN-TV.

The non-profit was founded in 1954 and provides residential, educational and therapeutic services to people with severe and profound developmental disabilities.
