Republican nomination for the 117th House District

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — From your local election headquarters, ballot counting from the primary election has wrapped up for the day in Luzerne County.

All eyes are on the race for the Republican nomination in the 117th House District. 28/22 News reporter Madonna Mantione is live in Wilkes-Barre to explain.

Every vote matters in this too-close-to-call primary contest. There was lots of counting but no major updates on Monday.

Unofficial results posted Friday show that challenger Jamie Walsh leads incumbent State Rep Mike Cabell by just five votes. Now that doesn’t include provisional or military ballots cast by voters which the board is adjudicated on Monday at Penn Place.

It’s a very intricate process, involving election board members, election bureau staff, and attorneys representing the candidates. The winner may seem clear after this process is complete, but that winner will not be official until the election board certifies the results of the primary.

“After today we’ll move into our write-ins, which is county-wide, every write-in ballot that has been cast will be reviewed by our board, and then overvotes and undervotes will be reviewed as well,” said Emily Cook, Acting Luzerne County Election Director.

The deadline for certification is May 13 and the process picks back up on Tuesday at 9:00.
