Report: Tyler ISD’s Early College High School named best in East Texas

TYLER, Texas (KETK) – Tyler Independent School District’s Early College High School (ECHS) was ranked one of the best high schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

According to the report, out of 17,655 high schools in the nation, ECHS ranked 600 and #1 in East Texas. With 2,021 high schools in the state, ECHS ranked 84 and received a score of 96.6 out of 100 from the report.

“This achievement reflects the hard work and dedication of our students, teachers, and staff. It also highlights the effectiveness of our Early College program in preparing students for higher education and future careers,” ECHS Principal Amanda Hortman, said.

U.S. News & World Report said the six indicators used to determine high schools scores are: college readiness, college curriculum breadth, state assessment proficiency, state assessment performance, underserved student performance and graduation rate.

TISD said ECHS offers students the opportunity to earn a free associate degree from Tyler Junior College.

Local colleges feel relief as FAFSA applications come in

“People ask me what the secret to our success is, and it is truly no secret,” Hortman said. “We all know and agree that we will do whatever is necessary to help each student reach the finish line, no matter their circumstances.”

ECHS’ new campus, on 3011 Earl Campbell Pkwy, is also having a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house at 6 p.m. on May 9 and the public is invited to celebrate.
