Repeated soaking rains flood Kansas City plumbers with work

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Heavy rain has fallen across the Kansas City region for the past week-and-a-half, and it’s starting to take its toll on homes and basements.

“It’s one of those things that you don’t see until you have weather like this,” Joe Randall, the operations manager at Buckner’s Heating, Cooling & Plumbing, said.

Plumbing companies are seeing a rise in services calls.

“Sump Pump – either the sump pump is failing, it’s either nonstop running, seizing up – issues like that,” he described.

“So we’re having to go in swap out, or we have some folks who don’t even have a sump pump and we’re finding that water is flooding up through he basement floor. With the amount of water that’s happening we’re finding a lot of issues with drainage and water getting out of the basements.”

Not only are they getting more calls, but the calls are also more severe, including a woman with more than a foot of standing water in her home. They also stress the problems they’re seeing are preventable.

“Know you drainage – know what’s going on in your home and your property – how well the run off is, if it’s something that can sustain this volume of water that we have in Kansas City right now,” he said.

A part of knowing your drainage is to ensure that the water shedding is happening away from your home. It’s also wise to keep up with the quality of your equipment, for example, has your sump pump run its course?

These are all things that could keep your house from flooding.

“Especially with the uptick in rain – it’s one of those things where you don’t know you have an issue until a situation like this happens, and you just have like constant rain – constant flooding of these areas,” Randall said.
