Repairs at Orange Mound Park will cost thousands, city officials say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — As police search for those responsible for a mass shooting at Orange Mound Park, the city is assessing the damage left behind.

Last month, we met community members who had spent their own money painting and maintaining the park. They wanted to make sure it was a place for children to come together.

24 hours after our interview, a giant block party held without a permit turned into chaos.

A video captured a car doing donuts on the basketball court, and seconds later, shots ring out.

9 shot, 2 killed at Orange Mound Park in Memphis

Nine people were shot, and two of them died.

Far too many people were left grieving while the park was in shambles. Tire marks were left on the court, and playground equipment was covered in bullet holes.

City officials tell the WREG investigators that repairs will cost $25,000 and that the basketball court received the most damage.

“We are going to support his community and make sure that these repairs get done,” said Mayor Paul Young.

If there’s any good news, the $1.2 million splash pad that opened less than two years ago did not receive any damage. It was a new piece of the park on a city pool site that neighbors were thrilled to get.

That pride and the hard work that went into the park was overshadowed in a matter of hours.

“It’s definitely difficult, that’s meant for kids destroyed in that way,” said Mayor Young.
