Apr. 25—SUNBURY — State Rep. Michael Stender will host a free license plate replacement event this afternoon.

Stender reminded vehicle owners that if their license plate is difficult to read, a replacement plate is available for free.

To help facilitate the process to turn in the illegible plate for a new one, Stender is hosting an event at the former Sunbury Community Hospital parking lot, Merle Phillips entrance, from 1 p.m to 3 p.m.

Registration is required, Stender said.

"It's normal for license plates to wear out over time from weather and age," Stender said. "While PennDOT offers free replacements for these worn-out plates, the process can be burdensome. This event is all about simplifying the process for vehicle owners."

If the plate is determined to be illegible, paperwork will be completed for no fee, Stender said.

A new standard replacement plate should arrive in a few weeks at the vehicle owner's home address.

According to PennDOT, a registration plate is deemed illegible when one or more numbers or letters cannot be recognized from 50 feet or if the registration plate shows any blistering, peeling, discoloration or loss of reflectivity.
