Rep. Greg Murphy has tumor in skull, plans surgery to remove it

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Congressman Greg Murphy, who represents the Outer Banks as part of North Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District, has a tumor in his skull.

Murphy, a Republican and member of the House Freedom Caucus, made the announcement on Tuesday.

“As a physician I have, for the last 30 years, taken care of thousands and thousands of patients. It is now my turn to be one,” Murphy said. “After a series of tests and scans, I have been diagnosed with a base of skull tumor called a pituitary macroadenoma. It is thought to be a benign tumor, however, given its size and location, and its subsequent ability to affect vital structures in the brain, I am scheduled to have it surgically removed.”

Murphy added that the “prognosis is excellent,” and he expects to be back to work full-time soon.

“I am, as are all things, in the hands of God and am at absolute peace,” Murphy said in a statement. “I appreciate your thoughts and prayers and hope everyone understands our desire for privacy at this time.”

The 61-year-old has been the representative for the 3rd District since 2019, after serving in the North Carolina General Assembly from 2015 to 2019. He faced criticism in recent days for suggesting that Israel could use nuclear weapons in its war in Gaza.
