Remains found in Newark identified as missing man

Skeletal remains found by a survey crew in Newark, Wayne County, last week have been linked to those of a missing man, according to the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office.

Kevin Heise was 44 when he was reported missing in September 2022. Richard Martin, chief of the Village of Newark Police Department, said investigators extensively searched the Erie Canal and the canal's shoreline at the time, but did not find him.

Heise's remains were found Friday afternoon by a crew surveying a property at East Union Street in the village, Martin said. The remains were identified as Heise, the department announced on Monday.

According to the National Missing and Unidentified persons database, Heise was last seen by his family on Sept. 2, 2022 in the village.

Officers continue to investigate the incident.
