While many of us have followed and adored Regina Spektor’s music for years, she’s gone quiet as of late.

(Except, of course, during the opening credits of Orange is the New Black.)

Her last album was 2012’s What We Saw From The Cheap Seats, so it’s high time that the twee songstress makes her return.

And now, it’s official — Spektor’s fourth album, Remember Us To Life, drops on September 30, and ahead of its release, she’s put out new song “Bleeding Heart.”

Like most Spektor songs, “Bleeding Heart” walks a fine line between overly precious and too real, and despite its cutesy name, “Bleeding Heart” has, at its core, a tough mantra: “Never mind your bleeding heart,” repeated over and over as though it’s ever as easy as that. The central struggle is one of empathy — you feel, deeply, the things that are going on around you, but it’s not healthy to take on humanity’s foibles on your shoulders. To that, Spektor sends a missive: You can still feel these things, just don’t lose yourself in that feeling.

As for the song itself? It starts off almost cloyingly cute; Spektor’s voice is at its peak affectation, but the song, and her delivery, start to fray around the edges as her desperation peeks through. When the genre switch comes, it’s sudden but welcome. Spektor continues to be one of the best singer-storytellers in the game, and we can’t wait to see what else she’s got up her sleeve.
