Recent car break-ins in Regent Square leave some neighbors on edge

Neighbors told Channel 11 News a string of car break-ins happened in Regent Square on Monday night.

One man showed us the damage the thieves left behind a shattered passenger window. Thieves pried the window open and searched the car for valuables, now he will have to pay for the cleanup.

“The window needs to be repaired, which is about $500,” said neighbor Joe McKenna.

Joe McKenna said he would have to multiply that amount by two because both his and his wife’s cars were broken into outside of their Regent Square home.

McKenna told Channel 11 News they weren’t the only family hit on their street.

On Tuesday morning, Mckenna woke up to a driveway filled with broken glass. He said the thieves were obviously searching for valuables but found nothing. He also said the thieves have hit his neighborhood before.

“This is not a one-off occurrence. It happens a lot in this neighborhood and even the glass repair man told me he had multiple jobs in this area on that particular day,” he said.

Now he said the cleanup will likely cost him hundreds, and his peace of mind.

“I have a 6-month-old daughter and if the criminals got brazen enough to break into the house, that would just be a nightmare and it’s not stress I want to live with,” McKenna explained.

He also told Channel 11 News that he wants to see patrols in his neighborhood increased. We reached out to police to see if they have plans to increase officers in the area but have not heard back.
