Rash of destructive burglaries in Southeast Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn.– Police are investigating a rash of burglaries at a large office complex in Southeast Memphis.

At least seven businesses were hit between Friday and Monday in the 5800 block of Mt. Moriah.

Investigators said the thieves shattered windows or doors to get inside and left with laptops, televisions, and other electronics.

Mike McKinney, who owns Mobile Drug Testing, said he found out early Saturday morning his business had been burglarized. He said someone broke a window with a piece of concrete and took about $3,300 worth of electronics.

“They took two iPad tablets, one 17-inch computer, and my work computer—my desktop,” McKinney said. They tried to take the TV but couldn’t get it.”

Officers arrived at the complex just before 4 a.m. Saturday and saw someone dressed in black running through the parking lot. They discovered two backpacks, a desktop computer, and two televisions nearby.

A barbershop was also burglarized early Monday morning. The owner was out of town when it happened but said it was all captured on camera.

McKinney said he’s been at the Mt. Moriah location for three years, and this is the first time anything like this has happened there.

“It’s maddening because we have to meet these insurance deductibles, take all these pictures, and get stuff notarized. It’s just a total headache, and then there’s the loss of business in the process as well.”

McKinney said he plans to beef up security with cameras and more lighting.
