Ramps between I-74, University Avenue closed in Urbana

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The University Avenue ramps leading to and from I-74 in Urbana are going to be unavailable to drivers for the next four months.

IDOT announced that the ramps at Exit 185 are closed as of Wednesday morning in order to “rehabilitate” the bridge over the highway. In addition, westbound I-74 will be reduced to one lane at the interchange.

Detours for the ramp will be posted during the construction period, which is expected to last until August.

Officials said drivers should consider using alternate routes when feasible. If not, they should expect delays and allow for extra time to travel through the area. Drivers are urged to pay attention to the conditions and signs in the work zone, avoiding use of electronic devices, while obeying the speed limit and being alert for workers and construction equipment.

The construction project is a part of the Rebuild Illinois capital project, which will improve more than 10 million square feet of bridge decks over the next six years.
