NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY)– In New Iberia, the community came together once more in support of an 11-year-old girl, who they say, was wrongfully charged with murder back in November.

“We want her to go home to her family and start the healing process”, Laramie Griffin, a member of Evolve Louisiana, said.

Murder charge dropped for 11-year-old New Iberia girl, charged with obstruction of justice

Local non-profit organizations such as Evolve Louisiana, Voice of the Experienced and Village 337 said they held this rally to speak to the community after an 11-year-old girl was charged with murder in the killing of 36-year-old Kameron Bedsole of New Iberia. Griffin said this is an opportunity for the community to improve.

“We have to speak to each other, we have to learn, we have to share knowledge and we have to stand in the gap and become more sound in realizing that some things are not in our favor,” Griffin said.

Consuela Gaines with Voice of the Experienced, said it’s crucial the community recognizes that every vote matters.

“They don’t realize how impactful their votes are that had we voted the right people into office, its possible that we wouldn’t have even seen this 11-year-old girl behind bars,” Gaines said.

“This 11-year-old girl needs to come home”, Griffin said. “Soften their heart, and picture their children in those chains and that orange jumpsuit inside of the Lafayette Detention Center.”

A predisposition hearing for the 11-year-old girl’s sentencing will be held at the Iberia Parish Courthouse on April 16.
