Raising Cane’s River Center plan moves forward at Metro Council meeting

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Metropolitan Council members unanimously approved a plan to redevelop the Raising Cane’s River Center on Wednesday, May 22.

The plan, proposed by East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome, is estimated to cost $120 million which includes a new headquarters hotel.

Since there will be a new arena approved for LSU, the goal is to redevelop the river center into a convention space. Concerts and events will be held in the proposed LSU arena.

The mayor spoke on many changes that can be made for the river walk and downtown, saying that the expansion could go as far as the Bluff at Southern University.

Many council members gave appraisal to both the mayor and those part of the plan, saying that the area’s redevelopment would become more inclusive.

“It is time for us to do something with the downtown, but make sure that it is inclusive,” said Councilwoman Carolyn Coleman of District 10.

Broome mentioned revenue is slowly decreasing and that many residents are going to other areas besides downtown. She hopes that with this new project, numbers will grow and business will boom.

“The goal is we want this to be a Capital Region star that attracts people from all over,” said Broome.

The mayor’s office said in a statement that their next step is to appoint a Project Oversight Committee, which will be chaired by Coleman since the river center lies in her district.

They said one of the goals is to make sure that the public is involved in the process and will be able to see the step-by-step renovations. To learn more about the redevelopment plan, click here.
