Rainbow Jellyfish

A jellyfish resembling a spaceship stunned a diver, who bumped into the glowing creature as it danced gracefully underwater in the Protea Banks off South Africa. The striking color of this crown jellyfish was captured by hobby photographer Pier A. Mane, 38, of Cape Town, who swam alongside the peaceful giant.

At over 3 feet in diameter, this huge jellyfish is an ecosystem in its own right, hosting fish and microorganisms that light it up from inside. Crown jellyfish can create bioluminescent displays by themselves but they only do so, as a defense mechanism, when they are touched.

Microorganisms living inside the jellyfish have created this beautiful array of colors. Each species of microorganism gives off a different shade inside the jellyfish, with which they share a symbiotic relationship. (Caters News)
