Rain pelts Daytona Beach early Sunday morning, more showers expected in the afternoon

Day 3 of Bike Week got off to a wet start early Sunday as a weather system brought thunderstorms with wind gusts and lightning over the Daytona Beach area, but by 9:30 a.m. the rains had pushed offshore.

But more rain is expected later, National Weather Service forecaster Matt Volkmer said.

Thunderstorms are expected to redevelop Sunday afternoon raising the chance of rain to 50% along with a possibility of small hail in inland Volusia County areas. A few showers will move into the Daytona Beach area, Volkmer said.

"We are looking at thunderstorms redeveloping from midafternoon to after 2 or 3 p.m.," Volkmer said.

Rain chances decrease on Monday to 20% and rise a bit to 30% on Tuesday. But Wednesday, another front will approach the area and the likelihood of rain will rise to 60% Volkmer said.

On Thursday and Friday, the weather is expected to be mostly dry with temperatures in the upper 70s.

Rounding up Bike Week, Saturday will see a high of 83 degrees but some rain will move in on Sunday as a third front rolling in will increase the chance of rain to 40%, Volkmer said.
