Queen Creek to host cardboard box car 'drive-in' for Earth Month

Mar. 24—Most drive-in movies are scattered with open trunks, blankets and blaring radios. Queen Creek, however, is set to celebrate Earth Month with a drive-in movie event on April 5 a little differently — the park will be filled with cars made out of cardboard.

The cardboard box car "drive-in" movie event at Founders' Park is open to all families and encourages residents to create their box cars out of cardboard and other recyclable material.

This will be the second year the event will be put on by the town's Environmental Division in an effort to encourage residents to learn about environmentally friendly practices for Earth Day. Last year, the event drew nearly 200 people in their homemade vehicles.

The event will feature the Disney/Pixar film "Finding Nemo," a popular movie that follows the story of a clownfish as he searches the ocean for his son. Free popcorn and water will be available at 6:30 p.m. before the start of the movie at sunset around 7:15 p.m.

"These events and activities — small and large — help to foster the hometown feel and sense of community," said Constance Halonen-Wilson, communications and marketing manager for Queen Creek.

This event is a part of a larger series of Earth Month events. Earth Month, which will be made official at a town council meeting on April 3, is an extension of Earth Day and will include multiple community activities throughout April. Queen Creek suggests that residents spend time at parks and trails during this time. Opportunities to learn about water conservation and recycling through city events and educational workshops will also be available to residents and can be viewed on the city's website. Queen Creek encourages kids, families, teachers and all residents to make small changes to help the planet.
