Putnam to host solar eclipse activities
The Putnam Museum & Science Center, 1717 W. 12th St., Davenport, is offering special activities for the total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8.
They will have eclipse viewing glasses available for sale, for the main event, with activities in the Grand Lobby from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
12:48 p.m. – Safely start viewing partial eclipse (outside)
2:03 p.m. – Peak of the eclipse
3:17 p.m. – End of the eclipse
Plus, the eclipse-themed film “Totality” will be shown the Discovery Dome – an inflatable dome theater/planetarium, in the Ed Flex space (old store, just off the Grand Lobby). Showings of the half-hour film will be Monday at 10:15 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon.
Produced by Academy Award nominees Sandbox Films, Kate Davis and David Heilbroner, “Totality” interweaves science, humor, cultural diversity and natural beauty in a sweeping feature-length documentary portrait of the human experience in the moon’s shadow, according to the film website.
The film will bring to life cities and towns across the country as people prepare for and experience some four minutes when the stars come out during a bright day. With no tickets required, no political agenda, no winners and losers, this celestial occurrence offers a rare moment of unity as people from all walks of life gather for a dramatic light show performed by the Sun and Moon.
The visual and emotional force of the total eclipse may then remind us that we all stand together on a tiny dot in a vast universe, the site says.
The April 8 activities are free with museum admission. For more information, visit the Putnam website HERE.
