‘Put the guns down’: Murder victim’s family urging young people to stop the violence

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Demetria Brown is coming to terms with losing her brother, 31-year-old Barrington Moore.

She spoke with News 2 with her family by her side.

“It’s been hard for us to eat and sleep,” Brown said. “Our minds have just been all over the place.”

Brown remembers getting the horrifying call on Thursday, April 18.

“I immediately just threw on my clothes and we went to the crime scene,” Brown said. “When we got there, they told me he was gone. That is when the pain started.”

The scene was off Youngs Street in North Nashville.

Metro police said Moore was picking up 15-year-old Darrin Fleming from a party at a short-term rental. Moore was reportedly mentoring the teen who was out past his 8 p.m. probation curfew.

Fleming was apparently not ready to leave and hid in a closet. Investigators said after an argument, Fleming shot and killed Moore.

“There is more to life than partying,” Brown said. “Go to school. Get your grades. Make something of yourself.”

Brown hopes something positive comes from her brother’s murder.

“I just hope a lot of young kids look at this example and want to put the guns down and go down the right path,” Brown said. “They need to understand someone is there for you; you have to let them be there for you.”
