‘We need to put the brakes on this’: Carthage Council Member wants to hold off on impeachment proceedings against Mayor
CARTHAGE, Mo. — The Carthage City Council met again Tuesday night (5/21) for yet another special council meeting. This makes the second council meeting in just two days.
The purpose: More discussions regarding the impeachment of Carthage Mayor, Dan Rife.
Monday night’s talks entailed a resolution — Rife vetoing it — followed by a majority of councilmembers ruling against the veto on the advice of Special Counsel to the City, Paul Martin.
Tuesday night, they voted to remove some of the language Martin argued Rife violated with his veto.
Regardless, the impeachment proceedings are moving forward. It will start at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5. The council also voted to add a second date: Thursday, June 6 at 4:00 p.m.

However, Councilmember, Lori Leece wants to hold off on things, citing the need for a city attorney and formal council training for new members to happen before moving forward. The majority of the council voted against that motion.
“This is not a small matter, and we need to know that we’re doing things right. We also don’t have a city attorney at this current time, so I don’t feel like I have legal representation to ask council of, that’s unbiased. I just feel like that’s very important, and I would have liked to have seen us put the brakes on this tonight and I’m very sad for our community,” said Councilmember Leece.
Leece says only two council members have attended new council training. Five new members were elected to the council back on April 2.
