Purdue looking for families to host European students from July 6-15

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University is looking for families in West Lafayette to host one of the 55 top high school scholars from Europe and the United States who will attend the university this summer as part of a U.S. Department of State program.

The students will stay with the families from July 6-15.

Students will participate in the 2024 Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellowship program, which is designed to build relations among future leaders as they study in the university’s College of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

Purdue is the only U.S. university hosting this annual summer program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

“We are looking for families to host 2024 fellows,” said Anatoli Rapoport, director of the Purdue summer program and professor of social studies education in the release. “Fellows will be staying in host families from Saturday, July 6, until early Monday morning, July 15, when they will leave for Washington, D.C.”

Students who are a part of the fellowship will discuss important issues in global and transatlantic politics, mass media, global citizenship, and community service. The students will stay in a residence hall for part of their time, but from July 6 to 15 they will stay with local families.

Families interested in hosting students will need to provide separate beds for each fellow, but private bedrooms or bathrooms are not needed.

Family members over 18 years of age must complete a simple online criminal background check at no charge as the program will pay the background check fee.

Interested families can complete an online Host Family Application form. A welcome reception for host families will be held July 6, and a farewell reception for host families and fellows will be held July 14.

All students are English speakers, responsible young men and women between 16 and 18 years of old from Europe and the U.S. They are chosen through a rigorous selection process to participate in this prestigious fellowship, according to the release.

On weekdays, students will take classes or participate in community service, social, and cultural events.

Host families will be responsible for transporting students to campus by 8:30 a.m. and picking them up around 4:30 p.m., providing breakfast and dinner, and interacting with them in the evenings.

On the weekends, families will be able to take them to Tippecanoe County events and sites and introduce European students to family life in the United States.
