Pueblo’s city flag will be flown all around the Steel City this Friday to mark the first Pueblo Flag Day.

But the city flag will also be flown up in Denver at the Colorado Capitol, interim Chief of Staff Marisa Pacheco shared with city council members at their work session Monday evening.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said in a statement shared with the Chieftain that he is "thrilled to raise the Pueblo flag at the capitol on Friday" to celebrate the first Pueblo Flag Day.

"Pueblo plays such an important role in our state, as a cultural center, a great place to live, a wonderful place to visit and explore. Pueblo is also home to our world-famous Colorado State Fair and Pueblo chile, both of which are celebrations of the rich agricultural history in Pueblo and across Colorado," Polis said.

The Steel City flag has a light blue background and the word "Pueblo" written in white capital letters, with the “O” replaced by a sunset graphic.

The intent behind Pueblo Flag Day was originally locally focused. The 2023 cohort of Leadership Pueblo devised the idea to show collective pride in Pueblo.

"One of the ways we are trying to get solidarity throughout the community is to bring something tangible that's going to pull us all together," Leadership Pueblo 2023 class member Russ Drury previously told the Chieftain. "We thought the Pueblo flag would be the item to do that."

Local businesses are being encouraged to fly the flag or display a decal.

Friday marks 154 years since the city was founded. The Leadership Pueblo class landed on March 22 as the first Pueblo Flag Day, as the city was first incorporated on that date in 1870.

Mayor Heather Graham and City Council President Mark Aliff were both invited to speak at a commemorative event Friday morning at the Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce, Pacheco said.
