Public Health issues ocean water quality warnings for all L.A. County beaches

Rainfall over the weekend has prompted Los Angeles County health officials to issue an Ocean Water Quality Rain Advisory on Monday for all beaches countywide.

Officials are asking beachgoers to avoid “all water contact, especially near discharging storm drains, creeks, and rivers due to potentially higher bacteria levels in these areas. This includes any runoff that may flow onto or pond on the beach sand,” a news release said.

After the recent rainfall, the water can be contaminated with bacteria, chemicals, debris, trash, and other public health hazards from city streets and mountain areas.

“Individuals who enter the water in these areas could become ill. Rain advisories remain in effect for 72 hours after the rainfall ends,” officials said.

The advisory is slated to end on April 17 at 4 p.m.

Residents can get more information on beach conditions by calling the county’s beach hotline at 1-800-525-5662 or by visiting the L.A. County Public Health website.
