KEY WEST — A Port St. Lucie man died Thursday afternoon while freediving in waters north of Key West, police said Saturday.

Andrew Wilson Velo, 55, was found unresponsive in the water at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on X.

Velo was taken to the U.S. Coast Guard station in Key West to be treated by paramedics after being found in the water. Deputies said foul play does not appear to be a factor in the death of Velo, who was identified Saturday.

Velo’s death comes after the death last Sunday of Virgil Price III of West Palm Beach, a competitive freediver who was spearfishing near the Halsey shipwreck off the coast of Fort Pierce and never resurfaced, St. Lucie County sheriff’s deputies said.

Freedivers go underwater while holding their breath, and don’t use scuba equipment.
