Proper gun storage reminder amid Crumbley sentencing

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The first parents ever have been charged and convicted for a mass shooting their son carried out.

Jennifer and James Crumbley, Ethan Crumbley’s parents, were sentenced today immediately after several parents of the victims gave emotional statements in an Oakland County Courtroom in Pontiac, Michigan.

The shooting incident happened at Oxford High School in 2021. Ethan shot and killed four students; six other students and a teacher were wounded.

Ethan pleaded guilty the following year to four counts of first-degree murder and other charges. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole in December.

Both James and Jennifer Crumbley have been sentenced to between 10 and 15 years in prison.

This case is raising a lot of questions on how to keep firearms out of reach and out of sight for children.

In Alabama, there’s no law that imposes a penalty on someone who fails to secure an unattended firearm and leaves it accessible to an unsupervised minor. However, gun owners can still take steps to make their homes and communities safer by storing their guns securely.

If you own a gun, it’s recommended that you keep it locked up and unloaded. Be sure to store your ammunition separately, and keep your ammunition locked up too.

Bullet & Barrel Indoor Shooting Range and Training Facility (one of several gun shops in the Huntsville metro area) spent some time with News 19 Tuesday afternoon, explaining different ways one can safely store their guns.

A cable lock prevents the firing of a firearm by someone who shouldn’t be using it. General Manager Louis Southard also says gun owners can purchase a lock box or gun safe.

“Keeping it locked up is the best way to make sure hands that don’t need to get on them, stay off of them,” Southard stated. “Whether it’s a young person or someone who is not allowed to be around them…nothing replaces locking them up.”

Southard says a lock box or gun safe ranges in price anywhere from $50-$1,000. He also says it’s important to understand proper storage techniques.

An Alabama lawmaker filed a bill in March 2023 that would require parents and guardians to secure their firearms and subject them to felony charges if their child brought a gun to a public school.

That bill was killed in May 2023.
