A new sculpture going live on Wednesday in the Flatiron South Public Plaza in New York is not your typical artwork. The Portal itself is an impressive piece of work, weighing in at 3.5 tons, with a footprint of around 11.5 by 11.5 feet. While the concept is cool, the underlying software technology that drives it comes from Video Window, a British company that originally created software and hardware for the purpose of connecting employees in remote locations — at home or in other offices — with an always-on connection.

Meta is rolling out an expanded set of generative AI tools for advertisers, after first announcing a set of AI features last October. Now, instead of only being able to create different backgrounds for a product image, advertisers can also request full image variations, which offer AI-inspired ideas for the overall photo, including riffs that update the photo's subject or product being advertised. In one example, Meta shows how an existing ad creative showing a cup of coffee sitting outdoors next to coffee beans could be modified to present the cup, from a different angle, in front of lush greenery and coffee beans, evoking imagery reminiscent of a coffee farm.

OpenAI says that it's developing a tool to let creators better control how their content's used in training generative AI. The tool, called Media Manager, will allow creators and content owners to identify their works to OpenAI and specify how they want those works to be included or excluded from AI research and training. The goal is to have the tool in place by 2025, OpenAI says, as the company works with "creators, content owners and regulators" toward a standard -- perhaps through the industry steering committee it recently joined.

TikTok argues that the law violates the U.S. Constitution's commitment to "both free speech and individual liberty." "For the first time in history, Congress has enacted a law that subjects a single, named speech platform to a permanent, nationwide ban, and bars every American from participating in a unique online community with more than 1 billion people worldwide," the lawsuit reads.

Microsoft and OpenAI have announced a $2 million fund to combat the growing risks of AI and deepfakes being used to "deceive the voters and undermine democracy." This year will see a record 2 billion people head to the polls in elections spanning some 50 countries, so there are concerns around the influence that AI will have among voters — particularly those in "vulnerable communities" that may be more susceptible to take what they see at face value. The rise of generative AI, including wildly popular chatbots such as ChatGPT, has led to a major new threat landscape involving AI-generated "deepfakes" designed to perpetuate disinformation.
