UPDATE: Inmate who went missing from Shasta County work camp found in Redding

An inmate who was reported missing from the Sugar Pine Conservation Camp east of Redding was found in the city and taken into custody, officials announced on Tuesday.

California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials and other law enforcement had been looking for Joseph Stewart, 31, after camp staff last saw him before breakfast at about 7:30 a.m. on Monday.

Stewart was arrested at 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday and taken to the Sierra Conservation Center where he will be returned to the custody of the state corrections department. State officials offered no other details about where Stewart was when they found him.

They said they planned to recommend the Shasta County District Attorney's Office charge Stewart for possibly escaping. State officials on Monday said they suspected Stewart left the conservation camp without permission.

Stewart is from Marin County and was serving a 10-year sentence for second-degree robbery, according to the state agency.

Sugar Pine is a low-security facility where inmates work on wildfires and other fire-related projects around the North State.

State officials said they searched the work camp grounds, but had been unable to locate Stewart.

Since 1977, 99% of all people who have left an adult institution, camp, or community-based program without permission have been apprehended, state officials said.
