Princes William & Harry discuss losing mom Princess Diana with Kate Middleton: 'We have been brought closer'

Prince William, Kate Middleton and Prince Harry came together for a candid conversation on the topic of mental health. The British royals sat down for a recorded discussion at Kensington Palace for their Heads Together campaign’s film series #OkToSay. During the video, Prince Charles’s sons opened up about how the death of their mother, Princess Diana, affected their relationship. "Both of us have always been open to each other, but we've never really talked about it," Harry, 32, said in the clip. "We've never really talked about losing a mom at such a young age."

He added, “When you speak to other people's families and little kids, you think ‘Wow I don't want them to have to go through the same things'. You want to with a little bit of experience, you want to help as much as you can and try [to] empower them to have that conversation. You want it to be brave for themselves to talk about it at a young age rather than bottling it up for far too long."

Meghan Markle’s boyfriend was 12, while William was 15 when their mother tragically died in a 1997 car accident in Paris. "Considering everything that you boys obviously sadly went through and the trauma that you experienced — I do think it’s incredible how strong and how you've been able to cope really," Kate, 35, said. "I put that down to your really early years and childhood experience. But also the relationship that you’ve got. You're amazingly close." The Duchess also noted, "Some families are sadly not as lucky as you guys have been.”

William, 34, chimed in admitting that his mother’s passing brought him and his brother “closer.” The Duke of Cambridge shared, “We have been brought closer because of the circumstances as well, that's the thing. You know you are uniquely bonded because of what we have been through. But you know, even Harry and I over the years have not talked enough about our mother." Harry added, "No, never enough.” The ginger-haired Prince explained, "I always thought to myself, 'What's the point about bringing up the past? What's the point of bringing up something that's only going to make you sad, it ain’t going to change, it ain’t going to bring her back.' When you start thinking like that, it can be really damaging. You always said to me, you’ve got to sit down and think about those memories."

Harry, William and Kate spearheaded the mental health campaign Heads Together, which was the Duchess’s “idea.” Like the royal brothers, the mom-of-two reflected in the video on her own “life-changing moment” of becoming a first-time mom in 2013. “Nothing can really prepare you for that. I remember the first few days with little [Prince] George, you have no idea, really, what you’re doing,” she confessed. “No matter how many books you read. Nothing can prepare you for it.” “There’s no rule book. There’s no training that teaches you how to do it. You just learn from previous generations and hope that you can translate it into what, you know, what you want to do,” William added. “When you have children it really does put your own emotions and your own life into perspective.”

The trio’s honest admissions in the film come ahead of Sunday’s London Marathon, which their mental health campaign is the race’s official charity partner. The royals are hoping that 2017 event will be recognized as "the mental health marathon" that gets the country talking about the issue.
