After Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, bowed out of the royal wedding due to health issues, Prince Charles has stepped up to the plate.

“Ms. Meghan Markle has asked His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to accompany her down the aisle of the Quire of St. George’s Chapel on her wedding day,” Kensington Palace announced in a statement. “The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to welcome Ms. Markle to The Royal Family in this way.” Since the Quire is halfway down the aisle of the chapel, it's unclear yet whether Meghan will walk part of the way herself or be guided by someone else.

The announcement surprised many royal watchers, who assumed Meghan would have her mother accompany her, or simply not have anyone walk her down the aisle. People spoke out on social media - and didn’t mince words about what they thought of the big event.

Some people were supportive of the move, saying it shows solidarity within the royal family and support for Meghan. Plus, Prince Charles doesn’t have any daughters, which makes the moment even more special:

Others wished Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, would do the honors instead:

Some commenters couldn’t help but bring up Princess Diana, especially since Meghan has been compared to her frequently in the press. Given Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s tumultuous marriage, some think he might not be the best symbolic choice.

But overall, many people noted, that it’s Meghan’s decision and, frankly, none of the public’s business. Let her have a happy wedding day, folks!
