Prince Charles' Wedding Role Sparks Mixed Reaction
After Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, bowed out of the royal wedding due to health issues, Prince Charles has stepped up to the plate.
“Ms. Meghan Markle has asked His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to accompany her down the aisle of the Quire of St. George’s Chapel on her wedding day,” Kensington Palace announced in a statement. “The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to welcome Ms. Markle to The Royal Family in this way.” Since the Quire is halfway down the aisle of the chapel, it's unclear yet whether Meghan will walk part of the way herself or be guided by someone else.
The announcement surprised many royal watchers, who assumed Meghan would have her mother accompany her, or simply not have anyone walk her down the aisle. People spoke out on social media - and didn’t mince words about what they thought of the big event.
Some people were supportive of the move, saying it shows solidarity within the royal family and support for Meghan. Plus, Prince Charles doesn’t have any daughters, which makes the moment even more special:
Prince Charles is walking Meghan down the aisle. I love how the royal family are just rallying and supporting this union anyhow

Choice is clear message from royals that Meghan’s definitely ‘in the fold’ after last week’s media circus. Prince Charles used to keeping calm at these events so well placed advice for Meghan. Also takes lots of pressure off Doria, who’s no doubt finding this whole thing surreal!

Prince Charles will walk down the aisle with Meghan! OMG - I will definitely start crying. It so wonderful of Charles and I think this will make people see another side of him. He love his sons and in many ways Meghan and Kate are the daughters he never got ❤️ pic.twitter.com/dvEy2JeDq6

Lovely decision of Meghan’s to have Prince Charles walk her down the aisle. Having two sons it’s probably not something that Charles ever thought he would get to do. Although Meghan obviously wanted her father so she must think very highly of Charles to ask him #RoyalWedding2018

A spectacular way for the Windsors to prove they will indeed be “the family Meghan never had.” #royalwedding

Others wished Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, would do the honors instead:
So Prince Charles is going to walk Meghan down the aisle. Would have been nice for her Mum to do it 🤔

So Prince Charles will be walking Meghan down the aisle tomorrow, I wonder why it isn't her mum doing that?
- Tracey Stock (@iamnotdeadyet) May 18, 2018
Great that Prince Charles is doing this but shouldn’t be a task for the in laws. This is a task for the girl’s family surely. Why can’t Mum do it?

Was quite excited to see a change of tradition & see a woman walking Meghan down the aisle. So many of us don’t have a father to walk us down the aisle so as much as I love Prince Charles, it would have been very modern to see a woman giving her daughter away.

Some commenters couldn’t help but bring up Princess Diana, especially since Meghan has been compared to her frequently in the press. Given Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s tumultuous marriage, some think he might not be the best symbolic choice.
why would she want charles to walk her down the aisle after what happend with diana like doesnt she know the stories 😒😒

OK. The ghost of Diana walking Meghan Markle down the aisle would be better than this Prince Charles bullshit. WHY CAN'T HER MOTHER WALK HER?
- Emily Hill (@3milyhill) May 18, 2018
To be fair Prince Charles is excellent at walking down the aisle with someone he’s only met four or five times.

Daily reminder that Prince Charles was trash who treated Princess Diana like trash and didn't deserve her. pic.twitter.com/Hbvbyqwrhf

But overall, many people noted, that it’s Meghan’s decision and, frankly, none of the public’s business. Let her have a happy wedding day, folks!
