Primary 2024: Berks election officials complete unofficial vote tally

May 2—Berks County election officials have completed their tally of results from the primary election.

Just 52,011 of the county's 219,131 registered voters cast ballots in the April 23 primary for candidates they felt would best fill leadership roles, according to data from the Berks County Election Services Office. That's a turnout rate of nearly 24%.

The vote totals now include 52,011 votes cast in-person on election day, through mail ballots and through provisional ballots. Of those, 35,330 were cast in-person, 16,568 were by mail and 113 were by provisional.

The party breakdown of the votes counted so far shows the Republican primary was slightly more popular than the Democratic version.

A total of 27,931 Republicans cast ballots, while 24,080 Democrats voted.

The primary featured notable nominating contests for president, U.S. senator, several state row offices, representatives in Congress, half of all state Senate seats, all seats in the state House and presidential delegates.

The current count, which can be found on the election services website, now includes election night totals as well as votes from mailed and provisional ballots.

The completion of the count triggers a five-day review period, ending next Thursday.

During the review period, candidates can challenge the results. That's also the window in which write-in candidates must file petitions to have variations of their names count toward their vote totals.

The results will remain unofficial until the Berks County Election Board certifies them following the review period.
