Pregnant woman, 2 unborn babies die after crash in Martin County

MARTIN COUNTY — A pregnant 31-year-old woman and her two unborn babies died after a Monday crash, according to Martin County Sheriff’s officials Tuesday.

Sheriff’s officials about 11:45 a.m. Monday went to the crash at State Road A1A and Southeast Delmar Street, sheriff’s spokesperson Laurie Weber said. The location is south of Southeast Indian Street and east of U.S. 1.

The woman who died, identified as Norma Elizabeth Madrid-Vasquez, was alone in a sedan that was turning south onto State Road A1A from westbound Southeast Delmar Street, Sheriff's Chief Deputy John Budensiek said. She was struck by a northbound sedan.

Madrid-Vasquez, who lived on Southeast Delmar Street, did not initially appear to have sustained life-threatening injuries.

“However, she was seven months' pregnant and went in to having seizures,” Budensiek said.

Martin County Fire Rescue crews used special tools to free her from the vehicle, said Cory Pippin, fire rescue spokesperson. Pippin said she was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce in critical condition.

Budensiek said Madrid-Vasquez died at Lawnwood.

“Lawnwood did their best to save the two babies, the twins, but were unable to do so,” Budensiek said.

Budensiek said an initial investigation appears to show Madrid-Vasquez, who did not have a driver's license, violated the right of way.

Speed also played a role, he said, noting the woman who struck her was speeding and was cited last year for 74 mph in a 45 mph zone less than a half mile away.

Budensiek said the woman was not arrested and no citations were issued, as the crash is still under investigation.

Pippin said it did not immediately appear there were other injuries.

All lanes of State Road A1A, also known as Southeast Dixie Highway, were closed after the crash.
