The faithful in Alliance gathered for a special service Thursday night at Alliance Christian Center to mark National Day of Prayer. The event included a church leaders from the Carnation City offering prayers for various groups that touch public life. Pastor Jonathan Truax of Science Hill Community Church offered a welcome prayer, followed by Alliance Mayor Andy Grove, who issued a proclamation for the event. A prayer for government came from Jeff Coggins, a retired United Methodist Church pastor; a prayer for the military came from Elder Jim Hornyak of Science Hill Community Church; a prayer for the media came from Pastor Kim Davidson of Alliance Church of the Nazarene; and a prayer for the church came from Dan Michaels, retired pastor of Grace Community Church. The theme for the 2024 National Day of Prayer was “Lift Up the Word – Light Up the World.” National Day of Prayer first was declared on Jan. 4, 1952, by President Harry S. Truman. It originally was celebrated each year on America’s birthday, but under President Ronald Reagan was moved to be held the first Thursday in May every year.
