Power restoration continues after damaging wind storm

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — At a briefing on Tuesday morning, May 7, Colorado Springs Utilities (Springs Utilities) said crews have made progress overnight after a destructive wind storm on Monday left thousands without power and cancelled classes at Skyway Elementary School due to downed power lines.

As of Tuesday evening, Springs Utilities said only 42 customers were still without service, down from more than 10,000 on Monday. Crews are now prioritizing Skyway Boulevard and the Crystal Park area, where officials said the majority of outages remain from extensive damage.

No classes Tuesday after power pole falls on school

Classes were cancelled on Tuesday at Skyway Elementary after a power pole and power lines fell onto the modular unit on school property used for band.

Springs Utilities said it is optimistic that power will be restored to the elementary school by Wednesday morning.

“At the elementary school, we experienced five poles that went down [on Monday],” said Jennifer Alecci, Manager of Operations with Springs Utilities. “It was one of our early on calls that we received during the event… five poles is a substantial amount of damage to have to restore, hence why we’re adding a second crew [Tuesday] to accommodate.”

Downed power lines cause small fires in Manitou Springs

In the Crystal Park area, power had to be shut down after live power lines were arcing across Crystal Park Road and caused several small fires south of Manitou Springs on Monday.

Springs Utilities said it is using every resource available to get power restored quickly.
